PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Addison drops heartbreaker to Falkville; Aggies, Broncos also fall

ADDISON — The Falkville Blue Devils scored with 1:12 left in the fourth quarter to knock off Addison 15-12 on Friday night.

Addison (1-3, 0-2 Class 2A, Region 6) took the early lead on a 54-yard Ben Robinson touchdown run with 3:17 left in the first quarter. The Bulldogs failed to score on the 2-point conversion, and the 6-0 lead lasted the rest of the first half.

On the second play of the third quarter, Noah Rice scored on a 43-yard run to give the Bulldogs a 12-0 lead.

Falkville (3-0, 1-0), scored its first touchdown with 5:19 left in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 12-7. The game-winning score came on an 8-yard run, and the 2-point conversion was successful.

Addison’s final drive resulted in three incomplete passes before the Blue Devils intercepted a desperation pass on fourth down.

Robinson finished with 131 yards rushing, while Rice gained 93 total yards — 34 receiving in the first half and 59 rushing in the second half. Zeb Maze had 43 yards rushing, as the Bullodgs gained 276 yards in the game.

Caden Baker led Addison on defense with 11 tackles, and Rice had eight. Gage Gilliland and Levi Hammock each had six. Robinson and Michael James both had a fumble recovery for the Bulldogs.

Addison will aim to snap its two-game losing streak next week when it hosts Hanceville.


Boaz 41, Fairview 14

Clay Culbert accounted for 363 total yards and six touchdowns to lead the Pirates over the Aggies in a 5A, Region 7 affair at L.F. Corley Jr. Stadium.

Culbert completed 13 of 21 passes for 256 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 107 yards and pair of scores as the Pirates evened their overall record at 1-1 in their region opener. Fairview fell to 1-2 (0-2).

Fairview scored first on the game’s opening possession. The Aggies went 71 yards using eight plays, with the touchdown coming on a 1-yard run by Austin Harris with 8:51 left in the first quarter. Jaxxon Swann added the point-after.

On the Pirates’ first play of the ensuing possession, Culbert hit Reagin Langley in stride for a 71-yard touchdown pass. Brayan Villela’s point-after tied the game at 7-7.

Fairview then drove to the Boaz 25-yard line on the next possession before fumbling. Tristan Gomillion recovered for Boaz at the 33.

Boaz then put together an 11-play, 67-yard drive that ended on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Culbert to Trey Knott. Villela added the point-after to give Boaz a 14-7 lead with 1:17 left in the first.

Fairview then drove to the Boaz 12 before turning the ball over on downs.

Boaz needed just four plays to increase its lead to 21-7.

Culbert completed passes of 38 yards to Knott and 17 yards to Evan Jones before scoring on a 34-yard touchdown run with 6:01 left in the first half.

The Culbert-to-Knott scoring combination struck again with 2:34 left in the first half, this one a 5-yard touchdown pass as the Pirates led 27-7 at the half.

Cameron Copeland was on the receiving end of a 56-yard touchdown pass from Culbert with 8:04 remaining in the third quarter. Villela’s PAT pushed the lead to 34-7.

Culbert added a 21-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter.

Harris rounded out the scoring with an 11-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter.

Boaz travels to Gurley on Friday for a matchup with region foe Madison County, while the Aggies head to Etowah.


Collinsville 32, Holly Pond 6

The Panthers roughed up the Broncos while picking up their second win of the season.

Collinsville (2-1, 1-0 3A, Region 5) got two punt returns and an interception return for touchdowns, and Holly Pond got its only score of the night on a touchdown pass with less than a minute left in the game.

Holly Pond’s six points came on a 45-yard pass from Michael Lambert to Dylan Morton.

The Broncos (0-3, 0-2) will look to end a 23-game losing streak next week at Susan Moore.
