The seventh annual “Dancers Fighting Cancer Tapping Out Childhood Cancer Gala” will be held this Sunday, Sept. 27, at the Alabama Theatre.
The event began when 8-year-old Alex Swader was in Children’s Hospital undergoing treatment for cancer. After surviving eight months of chemotherapy, Swader wanted to do something to give back and help stop childhood cancer.
Since Swader was a dancer himself, he decided to do something he knew and created the “Dancers Fighting Cancer Tapping Out Childhood Cancer” event.
The event quickly outgrew its original location at Gabrella Manor and moved to the Alabama Theatre, with the afterparty still at Gabrella Manor.
Swader recruits businesses to sponsor the event. There are five sponsorship levels that range from $100 to more than $1,000. Sponsors are easily identified around town by the large wooden yellow ribbons in front of their businesses.
Last year, Swader’s event raised more than $45,000 for the Alabama Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s of Alabama.
