James Jett wants to see Warrior kids again filling the town’s sports fields and gyms.
At Monday’s council meeting, council member Jett called for a meeting Thursday, 4:30 p.m. at Warrior City Hall for everyone who wants to get a Warrior youth sports league started.
The town formerly had a popular youth sports league with 31 teams.
“We want to create some interest and get our kids involved,” Jett said. “We’ve got to get it off the ground and get it started.”
The city recently received permission from the Jefferson County Board of Education to use the Warrior Elementary School gym, football field and concession stand. The city will coordinate youth league events with Warrior Elementary principal Mike Frugoli.
Also at the meeting, council member Brad Fuller asked that the city send a letter to the board of education to check the status of Warrior’s offer of land to the board.
Warrior offered to donate 100 acres — 60 owned by the city and 40 donated by a private citizen – to the board for the location of the new Mortimer Jordan High School.
“That’s well over a million-dollar donation they could use for the school,” said Fuller.
The board has not yet made a decision on where to re-build the high school, using tax money collected in 2005.
In other business, the council:
• agreed that Advanced Disposal could pick up trash in Warrior on Fridays in order to save money on fuel. Previously, the company picked up trash on Thursdays and Fridays.
• voted to allow Peggy Smith and Bill Reinhardt to “dress up” the burned former pawn shop on U.S. Hwy. 31 by putting up shutters and doors
• agreed to buy an outboard motor for the Warrior Fire Department rescue boat for $1,699.99 using funds from the state
• voted to send a police officer to a street crime seminar in Florence for $564.32 including lodging
• nominated Mayor Rena Hudson as a voting delegate for the Alabama League of Municipalities Convention, with council member Theodore Hines as first alternate and Johnny Ragland as second alternate.
• opened four bids for a Public Works brush truck and two bids for the demolition of abandoned houses. The council is scheduled to vote on the two items at the next council meeting, to be held on April 21, 7 p.m., at City Hall.
