PREP HOOPS ROUNDUP: Boland’s late free throws lift Vinemont in tourney opener; Warriors, Aggies split

Garrett Boland made four free throws late in the fourth quarter to help Vinemont’s varsity boys hold off Sumiton Christian 37-34 in the first round of the St. Bernard Christmas Tournament on Friday night.
The Eagles (4-8) will take on the host Saints Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
“We will need more points tomorrow when we play St. Bernard,” Red and White coach Todd Johnson said. “Garrett’s free throws helped us hang on.”
Boland finished with 12 points, while Corbin Barnett and David Flores added six apiece.
Cold Springs 65, Falkville 28
Josh Freeman poured in 28 points, 12 rebounds and five assists to help the Class 2A No. 5 Eagles leave Jesse George Gymnasium with an area victory on Friday night.
Cold Springs (11-3, 2-0) also garnered a strong outing from Triston Chambers, who finished with 19 points and nine rebounds.
The biggest triumph for the Blue and Gold, however, came from senior Tyler Rice, who earned his first playing time this season after tearing both ACLs back in the spring. The guard collected a pair of assists in five-plus minutes on the floor and received a standing ovation upon entering the game.
West Point 60, Fairview 50
Coach Randy Jones watched his group move to 7-7 overall and 3-0 in area play following a tightly contested county game against the Aggies on Friday.
Tanner Rusk led West Point, which has won six straight, with 20 points. Cameron Moore was good for 10 points, while Brandon Farley and Andrew Shaw tallied six each.
Fairview’s Austin Fletcher scored a team-high 17 points.
Walker 68, Hanceville 53
The Bulldogs were upended by the 6A Vikings during the second round of the Corner Thanksgiving Tournament on Friday.
Isaac Weissend (18 points) and Xavier Malcom (13 points) spearheaded the offense for Hanceville (10-5), which saw its six-game win streak snapped.
The Bulldogs will play Locust Fork in the consolation bracket Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
Hanceville 71, Tarrant 39
The Bulldogs rolled to a triumph in a first round on Thursday.
R.J. Evans (17 points), Malcom (16) and Weissend (13) provided the punch for Hanceville.
Good Hope 53, Vinemont 42
Matt Cofer scored a season-high 30 points to lead the Raiders to a win Thursday night over the Eagles.
Good Hope (5-9) also received contributions from Kallen Sharpton (eight points) and Blake Lyle (five) on offense.
Barnett paced Vinemont with nine points. Boland tacked on seven.

Abbi Taylor scored 11 points, Taylor Ann Yeager and Dalys Mullican tossed in 10 apiece, and the Purple and Gold used a 20-0 third-quarter run to pull away from the Lady Warriors on Friday.
Mary Hartline was particularly pleased with Mullican — who also notched nine rebounds — following the win.
“She killed it tonight,” the third-year Purple and Gold coach said. “She boxed out well and dominated.”
Yeager flirted with a triple-double by adding eight rebounds and eight assists.
With the victory, Fairview is now 11-3 on the season and 2-1 in area play.
The Aggies will host Arab next Tuesday night.
Falkville 49, Cold Springs 45
Despite a ferocious comeback attempt, the 2A No. 6 Lady Eagles weren’t able to overcome a 27-8 halftime deficit in Friday’s night area contest against the Blue Devils.
Bailey West scored 19 of her team-high 23 points in the second half, while teammate Emme Willoughby (11 points) and Camryn Crider (seven) also collected buckets for Cold Springs, which dropped to 9-6 this season.
Willoughby, a junior, surpassed 1,000 career points with her performance.
“I don’t think I remember a game where we’ve only scored single digits in one half,” coach Tammy West said. “We fought hard, though. We didn’t quit.”
Good Hope 54, Vinemont 11
The Lady Raiders coasted out to a 37-5 halftime cushion on Thursday evening en route to an easy victory.
Kaylee Maddox (13 points), Kate Kent (eight) and Skylar Hembree (eight) were the top scorers for Good Hope, which sits at 7-8 on the year.
Laura Smithson notched eight points for Vinemont.
