CULLMAN COUNTY TOURNEY (VARSITY GIRLS): Maddox, Raiders stymie Warriors in 38-17 quarterfinal rout

HANCEVILLE — Kaylee Maddox knew better than to take West Point lightly for the second time this month.
With a recent loss to the Warriors still leaving a bitter taste, the junior took matters into her own hands and led Good Hope’s varsity girls to a 38-17 rout Wednesday at the Cullman County Basketball Tournament.
At first glance, Maddox’s statline is solid but just short of exceptional. But take a deeper look, and that notion is quickly proven silly.
Twelve points? OK.
Eight rebounds? Not bad.
But seven blocks? Now you’re talking.
Not impressed yet? Well how about the nine points and two treys Maddox put up in the second quarter alone? That total, on its own, was more than West Point mustered in the entire first half … as a team.
Her 12 points entering intermission was double that of the Warriors, quickly releasing any leftover demons from a four-point defeat just two weeks earlier. Maddox said the Raiders came into that matchup confident from a win in the first meeting and admittedly rested on their laurels knowing West Point sharpshooter Mallory Walker was lost for the season.
Good Hope didn’t fall into the same trap Wednesday, leading 11-4, 20-6 and 31-10 at each quarter break.
“I knew I had to score tonight because I didn’t have a good game the other night,” Maddox said of a “rough” outing last week at Cold Springs. “I really just wanted to make up for it.”
Kate Kent flirted with double figures in a productive nine-point showing. Celest Whisenant followed closely with eight points for the Raiders, Sadie Abbott scored six and Jami Stinson added three.
A sure sign it was a good night for Good Hope? Abbott banked in a 3-pointer to kick off the third quarter and Stinson had one bounce off the front of the rim and in shortly thereafter.
Whisenant and Maddox wasted no time explaining what changed for the better in the Raiders’ rematch — less turnovers and better decision-making with the ball. It was surely a sight coach Michael Oldacre has been aching to see.
“We didn’t just pass it as fast as we could,” Whisenant said. “We actually turned and looked because usually we just turn and throw it away. But we handled the press really good.”
Birthday girl Lillie Burdette led the Lady Warriors with four points. Lexi Bell and Bailee Yearwood drained a 3-pointer apiece, the latter after ditching a mask to protect a recently broken nose. Lexie Burdette, Jeri Beasley and Olivia Vandenberg were good for two points each, and Madison Roberts made a free throw.
As Good Hope’s lone senior, Whisenant doesn’t want to leave her last county tournament without a trophy in tow. She and the No. 4 Raiders won’t have long to wait for their next shot at advancement with a semifinal bout versus top-seeded Holly Pond set for Thursday at 6:15 p.m.
Good Hope was blasted 53-24 by the Broncos in November but started to catch on to what makes Holly Pond tick two months later, keeping it within nine in the rematch.
“We just have to go out there and give it our all,” Whisenant said. “I think we have a really good chance at making it to the finals and winning this. We’re just going to have to play hard and keep our heads up.”
