Wrestling: Pinson Valley second, Gardendale fourth at Mortimer Jordan Invitational

Pinson Valley picked up a second-place finish at the Mortimer Jordan Invitational wrestling tournament, the last big local warm-up before super sectionals on Feb. 6-7.
The Indians finished with 1631/2 team points, not far behind winner Southside-Gadsden’s 176. Gardendale placed fourth, Jordan sixth and Hayden ninth.

Pinson’s Hank Turner won his weight class yet again, running his season bout record to 52-1. He took gold at 152 pounds by pinning Shon’Derious Spralling of J.O. Johnson in the finals.
Taylor Rhodes took second for the Tribe at heavyweight, Na Davis Pike was third at 182.
The Rockets had three second-place finishers: Scott Smith at 120 pounds, Scotty Clements at 145 and Andrew Freeman at 195.
The Blue Devils had weight-class winners with Braxton Worthington at 126 and Greg Abramson at 182. Tyler Camp was third at 170.
Macon Edwards took a silver medal for the Wildcats at 106 pounds.
All the local teams will finish out this week and part of next with dual- and tri-matches, then they will head to the AHSAA Super Sectionals to win a shot at the state finals in Huntsville.

All six local teams will take the short trip to Birmingham for the North Super Sectional, which will be held Feb. 6-7 at the Birmingham Crossplex. With the recent AHSAA realignment, wrestling classes are comprised of 7A, 6A and 1A through 5A.
