NORTHWEST REGIONAL TOURNEY: Top-ranked Generals beat Austin 66-53, set up top-three showdown vs. ‘Cats for 6A title

HANCEVILLE — Lee-Huntsville entered the Northwest Regional Tournament

After 32 minutes of play in Friday’s Class 6A semifinal, Austin learned quite quickly just how its opponent earned that top position.

The Generals (25-6) used their superior size to reign supreme over the No. 4 Black Bears (23-5) inside Wallace State’s Tom Drake Coliseum, as five players came away with double-digit showings to help Lee-Huntsville garner a spot in next Tuesday’s 3 p.m. title game against third-ranked Cullman.

Evan Wiley paced Lee with 15 points, while Gerron Scissum (14 and three thunderous dunks), Malik Burnett and Ashton Ray (11) and Kendrick Ashby (10) provided additional punch to the General’s offensive attack.

The Generals pulled down 21 offensive rebounds, forced 17 turnovers and blocked eight shots to notch the win.

Austin’s Camron Reedus and Josh Pearson respectively tossed in 15 and 10 points apiece.

% Phillips 78, R.A. Hubbard 42: The fifth-ranked Bears ran the pint-sized Chiefs right out of the Coliseum in the first of two 1A semifinals, leading by as much as 50 and cruising with the 17-plus-point contributions of three different players.

Jake Bonner unleashed a game-high 21 points. Jacob Feltman matched the 17 of Tyler Crumpton, who also had 11 rebounds, six assists, four steals and two blocks. Daniel Mann and Austin Campbell each had eight rebounds for Phillips, which takes a 24-5 record into Tuesday’s 7 p.m. title tilt against South Lamar.

R.A. Hubbard, which dressed out one seventh-grader, five eighth-graders and two freshman, received 16 points from Gaige Garth. Eighth-grader Tyson Garth, generously listed at 5′ in the program, had six points and three rebounds.

The Chiefs finished the season 13-12.

% South Lamar 60, Decatur Heritage 27: The seventh-ranked Stallions scored five points in just seconds before the halftime buzzer and romped to their first-ever regional win in the final game of the day.

Jydarren Cox made a 3 in what appeared to be the last play of the second quarter, but Kyle Redmond stole the spotlight — and the ball, which he promptly put in the basket after a fortuitous bounce on the rim.

Cox completed the evening with 19 points, four rebounds and three blocks. Redmond finished with 11 points, seven steals and four assists. Dave Cole gave South Lamar (28-1) two double-doubles with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Patrick Metzgar scorerd 11 points for Decatur Heritage, which enters the offseason 11-10.

Girls

% Berry 59, R.A. Hubbard 55: The Wildcats’ perfect season is still intact.

It took a comeback and extra four minutes to make sure of it.

Seventh-ranked Berry erased a 10-point deficit and outscored the Chiefs 7-3 in the second overtime of the day to move to 28-0 and earn a date with Decatur Heritage to decide the 1A regional championship. The finale is set for Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Karlie Milligan sealed the score with a pair of free throws in the closing seconds to cap off a 21-point outing. Taylor Jones (16 total points) added three points in the bonus period, and Hannah Herren rattled in a set at the charity stripe. Taylor Jones tacked on 16 points.

Contessa Liles had 23 points and four steals in 12-13 R.A. Hubbard’s near upset. Alexandria Mason had 18 points.

Both teams finished with 59 rebounds. Jones had Berry’s high with 16. Charm Sausberry’s 14 was the Chiefs’ best.

% Austin 64, Florence 36: The Black Bears shot their way to a second straight regional final, sporting a 58 percent clip in the first half en route to a morning drubbing.

Tyra Johnson led the charge for second-ranked Austin, which will play No. 7 Lee-Huntsville for the Class 6A girls regionals crown Tuesday at 1 p.m. The Southeastern Conference prospect sank four 3’s and had 14 of her 23 points by halftime.

Katie Speegle pitched in 17 points and seven rebounds for the Black Bears (25-4).

Alexis Sherrod scored a team-high 13 points for the Falcons, who finished 14-15. Jalexis Russell had nine rebounds, three blocks and three steals.

% Lee-Huntsville 65, Jackson-Olin 31: The Lady Generals stormed out to an early lead and didn’t look back en route to a blowout victory against the Lady Mustangs during the Northwest Regional Tournament on Friday.

Seventh-ranked Lee-Huntsville (20-9) garnered double-digit scoring contributions from Salina Virola (16 points) and Nyla Pressley (11). Additionally, 11 girls scored at least one point for the winning team.

Defensively, the Lady Generals forced 31 Jackson-Olin turnovers while keeping it under 25 percent shooting from the floor.

The Lady Mustangs were led in scoring by Lexius Houser with 10 points.

% Decatur Heritage 64, Hackleburg 38: Maddie Vinton collected 15 points, and the Eagles outscored the Panthers 19-4 in the first quarter to move on to their first regional final.

Fifth-ranked Decatur Heritage (22-5) had three other girls grab double figures —Savanna Naylor (12 points), Bekah Voss (12) and Chandler Sparkman (11) in the other qualifier for Tuesday’s 1A championship game. Sparkman posted eight rebounds. Voss had seven.

Kristen Camp recorded a double-double for Hackleburg (20-4). She had 13 points and 12 rebounds.
