This graphic from the National Weather Service Birmingham office shows freezing rain moving into the local area as early as 2 a.m., but will most likely be a couple of hours later.

Blount County Schools, Tabernacle Christian School of Gardendale and numerous other systems have made their call regarding delays or cancellations in classes, but the Jefferson County Schools still have not.

As of 11 p.m., JefCoEd was one of the few remaining local systems not to have announced that they will delay or cancel classes. Blount County decided Sunday afternoon to call classes off Monday, while Tabernacle will begin classes three hours later.

A spokeswoman for JefCoEd said the announcement could come as late as 4 a.m.

At 11 p.m. Sunday, the National Weather Service had kept in place its freezing rain advisory for Jefferson and Blount counties from 3 to 9 a.m. Monday morning. Rain has already moved into the area tonight, and the NWS says that north Jefferson and west Blount counties could see freezing rain by a 4 a.m., if temperatures drop to 32 or below by then.

The amount of precipitation will be light, but it doesn’t take a very thick coating of ice to cause problems on roads and bridges.

And if that isn’t enough, we could be facing a similar scenario on Monday night, followed by a brief period of light snow. More snow could be in store on Wednesday, though that forecast is a bit too far away for high confidence levels.

This story will continue to develop through the overnight hours.
