A couple of Cullman standouts are reaping the rewards of successful senior seasons and fruitful prep careers.

Lady Bearcats soccer star Hannah Spradlin received the Senior Excellence Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), while boys basketball stud Brontae Harris accepted an invite to this weekend’s fifth annual Alabama Basketball Academy (ABA) Senior Charity Showcase.

According to the NSCAA website, the Senior Excellence Award was established so member coaches could recognize a senior who makes “exceptional contributions to the team while exemplifying the finest attributes of a high school student-athlete.”

Cullman coach Jacob Brown said he received an email asking if he had anyone who fit the aforementioned description. His response was a no-brainer.

“I threw Hannah’s name in and sure enough, she won it,” Brown said.

Spradlin, the school’s Key Club president, is off to a sizzling start in her final high school season. The trusty goalkeeper and undeniable team leader is already up to four shutouts and has yielded just four goals in seven games.

The eighth-ranked Lady Bearcats are sitting at 6-1 a season after Spradlin set the school record for shutouts in a spring with 12. Brown has every reason to believe Spradlin can break the mark again before bidding farewell to the Black and Gold.

“She’s definitely really the only athlete I’ve ever met that gave 100 percent no matter what,” the coach said. “She’s been playing with a broken toe for three years. That’s the kind of person she is.”

Cullman boys basketball coach Bobby Meyer broke the news of Harris’ big invite Wednesday on Twitter. The senior showcase annually features tons of the top boys and girls talent in North Alabama.

Other confirmed participants for Saturday’s slate at Huntsville High include Hazel Green’s Ethan Stair (Mercer signee), Athens’ Jackson Pettus, Scottsboro’s Tavaras Tolliver and Lee-Huntsville’s Gerron Scissum. The girls will play at 4 p.m., followed by a pair of boys games at 5:30 and 7 p.m.

All proceeds go to the Boys and Girls Clubs.

Harris scored nine points in a thrilling overtime victory against Athens and 16 in the Northwest Regional Tournament final versus Lee-Huntsville despite playing with a couple fractures in his ankle suffered at the sub-regional stage. He finished the season with 522 points — good for an average of 15.8 a game — to boost his career total past 2,300.

“It’s a well-deserved nod to the most prolific scorer in Cullman County boys basketball history,” Meyer said of Harris’ invite. “His 3-point shooting stats this year are going to be among the best in state history.”

Harris was 97 of 213 (45.5 percent) from behind the arc this winter. According to the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s most updated online record book, the percentage places the sharpshooter sixth all-time for players with at least 170 3-pt attempts. Vinemont’s Josh Hembree (46.8 in 1998-99) is fourth, the same spot as Jay Hembree (46.0 in 2003-04) for players with at least 150 3-point attempts.
