Hello, Tuesday…
Weather: Warming up. We’ll see highs in the lower 80s today, though there is a 20 percent chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Those chances will end tonight, with lows in the lower 60s. Sunny skies on Wednesday, with highs in the middle 80s and lows in the middle 60s.
Ready for battle. Officials with the Alabama Education Association, one of the two major groups representing Jefferson County Schools employees, said they are prepared to file a lawsuit against the system to prevent the major job cutbacks announced two weeks ago. Dr. Gregory Graves, that associate executive secretary of the AEA, and the group’s legal team met with members Monday night to tell them how to exercise their recall rights – which would allow them first shot at any job openings similar to the positions the ones they were laid off from – and how to join any legal action the AEA might file. The board of education voted 3-2 to accept Supt. Craig Pouncey’s plan to cut more than 220 jobs, replacing them with 65 new positions for a net loss of 162 jobs.
Sports: Another title for the Blue Devils. Duke won its fifth NCAA men’s basketball national championship Monday night in Indianapolis, but had to stage a big-time comeback down the stretch to do it. But the Devils, who were trailing by as many as nine points in the second half, blew by Wisconsin in the late stages for a 68-63 victory. The Badgers didn’t give up easily, cutting an eight-point Duke lead down to as few as three points in the final minute, but couldn’t get past freshman center Jahlil Okafor, the likely top pick in the upcoming NBA Draft if he decides to turn pro. The championship is the fifth for coach Mike Krzyzewski, with four of them won at Lucas Oil Stadium or its predecessor, the Hoosier Dome… Crimson Tide: Alabama made it official on Monday, as they hired former NBA coach Avery Johnson to run the Tide’s men’s hoops programs. Johnson will get just under $18 million over six seasons. Johnson’s son, Avery Jr., plays for SEC rival Texas A&M, and the elder Johnson said his son will remain an Aggie.
