EDMOND, Okla. – An Oklahoma man died from one gunshot fired at him by authorities after he aimed a pellet gun at them, police said.

Garrett Sandeno, 24, was taken to OU Medical Center Presbyterian in Oklahoma City, Okla., where he died last night, said Jenny Monroe, Edmond Police Department spokeswoman.

One officer is on standard administrative leave with pay while police conduct an investigation, Monroe said. Sandeno was shot one time in the chest when an officer felt threatened by the gun that Sandeno was pointing at them, Monroe said.

Monroe said she does not know how long Sandeno was aiming his gun at the police.

Early in the afternoon, two police officers responded to a call for help on Wednesday at 4:49 p.m. when a woman reported to be Sandeno’s wife told police that her husband was suicidal because she was leaving him, Monroe said in a Thursday afternoon press conference.

“She said there were guns in the house, that he had attempted suicide before, and that he had a gun laying out on the bed currently when she was calling us,” Monroe said.

Sandeno’s wife reported that her husband had pulled out a gun and was going to kill himself, Monroe said. She also said she had left the house to place the 911 call at a family member’s house, Monroe said. She asked police to check on her husband’s welfare and stated she feared for her safety, so she left the neighborhood, Monroe added.

Officers reported seeing an adult male with a gun a little after 5:00 p.m. down the street and around the corner from the residence mentioned in the initial call to authorities, Monroe said.

According to police, Sandeno was carrying a gun by his side and the clothes he wore matched the clothing description made by his wife. “At that time, our officers gave multiple verbal commands to put down the weapon,” Monroe said. “When our officers were threatened by the suspect with his weapon, he (Sandeno) was shot by one of our officers.”

A “shot’s fired call” was issued by the police officers at 5:02 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon. At that time, the two officers began immediate first aid to the Sandeno until the area fire department arrived on the scene to provide medical attention, Monroe continued.

The two-part Edmond Police investigation encompasses a standard criminal investigation to present to the Oklahoma County District Attorney’s Office. An internal investigation will also proceed within the Police Department. Police have not released any officer’s name, due to the pending investigation.

“This officer has been with the Edmond Police Department for 15 years and has no prior incidents with our department,” Monroe said.

Witness statements and crime scene analysis included in the investigation. Police will also interview the officer involved in the shooting of Sandeno. Monroe said at this time Edmond Police believe there were two shots fired from the same officer with one of them striking the suspect who was 50 yards away.

“We have six people that witnessed some part of this incident from the neighborhood,” Monroe said. “We have one witness who was at the intersection — saw the officers with their guns drawn — saw the suspect with his weapon and did hear the verbal commands given.”

Monroe said the officer involved in the shooting is being given time to decompress because of the traumatic nature of the incident.

“In the next couple of days, we will speak with that officer and get that questioning taken care of,” Monroe said.
