- Gardendale angler Bo Hunter took first place at the Walmart Bass Fishing League's Bama Division tournament last Saturday on Lay Lake.
Bo Hunter bagged five nice bass on Saturday, and then he bagged an even nicer check.
The Gardendale fisherman won last weekend’s Walmart Bass Fishing League’s Bama Division tournament on Lay Lake. He hauled in a five-fish limit weighing 15 pounds, 13 ounces, which was 14 ounces more than runner-up David Lowery of Phenix City, the current leader in the division’s points standings.
Hunter told FLWfishing.com that he focused on mid- and upper-river areas on the Coosa River where the current created seams and edges.
“I preferred to stop at isolated wood patches where the water separated,” he said. “The bass seemed to be attracted to the sudden change of direction. My first fish came on a Lucky Craft Gunfish topwater bait. When the bait went down about seven feet there was a lot of activity.”
It’s the second tournament of the season for Hunter, who won $4,127 for his efforts Saturday. He also placed 27th in May on Logan Martin Lake.
The BFL is a lower-level tour operated by Fishing League Worldwide, formerly known as FLW Outdoors and originally named for Forrest L. Wood, inventor of the modern bass boat. The Forrest Wood Cup is the organization’s top tournament for touring pro anglers, which was won two years ago by former Gardendale resident Randy Tharp.
The Bama Division finale is in September, a two-day tournament on Lake Mitchell. The top 50 in the points standings move on to a regional tournament, where they compete for one of six berths in the BFL All-American Tournament.
