2015 ALL-STATE BASEBALL: Collins headlines Cullman quartet of 1st-teamers as 6A Hitter of Year
Published 10:58 pm Saturday, June 6, 2015
- Cullman's Owen Lovell - All-State First Team First Baseman
A Hitter of the Year is hailing from Cullman High for a second straight season.
Last spring, the Class 5A honor went to then-freshman sensation Owen Lovell. This one, the 6A accolade is going to senior slugger Cole Collins.
In addition to the offensive award, Collins anchors a quartet of Bearcats bestowed with first-team status when the Alabama Sports Writers Association released its All-State baseball squads late Saturday night. The Wallace State signee, a left fielder, was joined on the top 6A team by Jesse Scott (pitcher), Owen Lovell (first base) and Orvis Cuello (outfield).
Noah Fondren (third base) rounded out the Black and Gold’s representation as a second-team selection. Hanceville’s Hayden Loggins (pitcher) earned the same recognition in 3A.
For a kid who poured his heart and soul into Cullman baseball all four seasons as a varsity starter, this year’s 6A state championship was everything Collins ever wanted. The title of Hitter of the Year is just icing on the cake — and the result of an awful lot of hard work.
Driven by a lopsided sweep in the 2014 5A state title series and homerless junior campaign, Collins spent almost every waking moment of the offseason in the weight room or batting cage. Many an evening, the teen pulled into the driveway from training around midnight, only to rise at 5 a.m. and fit in a hitting session before 6:15 a.m. workouts.
At one point, Cullman coach Brent Patterson worried Collins was working “a little too hard.” Others questioned why the upperclassman was so hell-bent on sticking to his rigorous routine.
The answer became abundantly clear when opening day arrived and Collins proceeded to “put up a complete offensive season together as good or maybe better” than Patterson, a longtime assistant and seven-year head coach, has ever seen.
Calling Collins the best hitter in 6A might be an understatement. Based on his numbers, the lefty swinger has a strong case as the best hitter in the state.
Collins completed Cullman’s 55-game slate with Alabama bests in hits (80) and RBIs (64), as well as 6A highs in home runs (14), walks (48), runs (55) and on-base percentage (.605). His .479 batting average and 21 doubles were second in the class, and only Graham Ashcraft of 7A Huntsville sported more home runs (16) within state lines.
Collins, an All-State honorable mention as a sophomore, only struck out 13 times and was error-free with a pair of assists in 46 total chances in the outfield. He hung up his black and gold uniform with new program records in career hits (238) and runs (207).
“He’s a very driven, determined young man,” Patterson said. “It was amazing how he never got off track. He hit from Day 1 to the last day. Through a lot of the year, he basically carried our offense. The amount of home runs, yes, was a surprise, but the home runs were not. He’s been such a good hitter his whole career.”
Any other spring, Collins would’ve been a lock for 6A Player of the Year — and Scott for 6A Pitcher of the Year. Florence ace Brax Garrett put a wrench in those plans, however, swiping both prizes and likely cementing his position as the popular pick for Mr. Baseball.
Garrett, already projected as an early round MLB draftee with one more prep season still to go, went 7-1 with 141 strikeouts this season, which comes out to an insane average of just less than 15 K’s per seven innings.
The lefty tossed four shutouts, only gave up 17 hits and 11 walks, and touted a razor-thin 0.75 earned run average. He also had a 0.42 WHIP (walks + hits/innings pitched) and supplied significant offensive stats for a Florence team that didn’t provide him much support and bowed out against Hartselle in the first round of the playoffs.
Scott’s numbers were staggering as well. The southpaw racked up a state-best 14 wins, including all five Game 1s in the postseason, and recorded a save and career-high 119 strikeouts (8.96 K/7). The Auburn signee’s lone loss was to 7A state finalist Thompson, which he later avenged with a pair of W’s.
Scott, who reset the state record for consecutive scoreless innings at 33, pitched 93 total frames, collecting three shutouts, a 1.05 ERA and 0.94 WHIP in 11 starts and 18 appearances.
By the standard he set as a freshman, Lovell had a down year. Even still, it was one most players around the state and country would kill for.
Lovell’s 12 home runs and 61 RBIs were second-most in 6A behind Collins. The offseason Alabama commit also chipped in 63 hits, 49 runs, 30 walks and 13 hit by pitches.
To top it off, he hit a homer in Cullman’s first four playoff games, was the winning pitcher in Game 3 of the state title series and went 4 for 5 at the plate with two RBIs in said championship clincher. In six starts, Lovell was a spotless 6-0.
Cuello warranted first-team attention for his consistent bat alone but put himself over the top with a one-of-a-kind cannon. When the Snead State signee wasn’t dropping jaws with assists from right field — the Dominican native had three this season — he was busy piecing together a .410 batting average, 71 hits (second in 6A only to his best bud, Collins), 52 RBIs, 19 doubles, three home runs and 11 stolen bases.
Cuello also skied five sacrifice flies, two in the state title series and four in the playoffs. He had at least one RBI in all 11 postseason games and 21 overall for the playoffs.
Speaking of postseason heroes, look no further than Fondren. The sophomore capped off the ‘Cats five-round romp to their fourth state title as the 6A MVP, going 6 for 11 with six runs from the leadoff spot and holding down the fort at the hot corner in three tilts against Pelham.
Including the previous eight contests, Fondren finished the playoffs 22 for 38 (.579) with 19 runs, three doubles, five RBIs and three stolen bases. He had at least one hit in all but one of Cullman’s postseason games and at least two in all but three bouts.
Fondren had 6A third base-bests in hits (67) and runs (52). He also swiped 13 bases, was beaned a team-high 14 times and batted .370 for the year.
The Black and Gold’s four first-teamers are their most since a five-player haul following the program’s second state championship in 2007. UMS-Wright and Oneonta, both 4As, are the only baseball squads in the state to match Cullman’s first-team total this spring.
“You don’t win games individually. You win games with good teams,” Patterson said. “But individually we had a lot of good players I would take over just about anybody we saw all around the field.”
Loggins, recently named the 2015 All-County Player of the Year, is Hanceville’s first-ever first- or second-team All-State selection, according to the Alabama High School Football Historical Society website. Fellow senior Isaac Hardin’s honorable mention nod last season accounts for the program’s only previous All-State representation.
Every ounce of praise thrown Loggins way has been deserved. The ace compiled an 8-2 record with a save, 0.97 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 59 innings. His last loss was of the tough-luck variety in the late innings of a 2-1 defeat in the Dawgs’ second-round playoff opener.
Loggins also batted .320 and drove in 23 runs.
