HOLLY POND — The 28-14 final wasn’t indicative of Holly Pond’s loss to Collinsville Friday night.
The Broncos lost their third consecutive game — and 13th overall — in heartbreaking fashion.
After a first half that resulted in zero points between both squads, Holly Pond took a 7-0 lead late in the third quarter on a 14-yard run from quarterback Michael Lambert. From then on out, both teams exchanged blows.
Going into the fourth quarter, it was tied 7-7.
By the 7:24 mark, the game was all knotted up at 14-14, and it all went down hill for the Broncos from there.
Collinsville took a 21-14 lead with 2:32 left in the fourth quarter on a 10-yard pass.
That advantage then grew to 28-14 after capitalizing on an interception thrown on a desperation pass by the Broncos late in the fourth.
The final pick, while thrown in a last-second attempt at heroism, was one of three for Holly Pond’s Lambert.
“We had two turnovers in the first half that really cost us,” Bates said. “We played defensively really hard, but we turned the ball over near the end zone when we had chances to score.”
Lambert was responsible, however, for both of Holly Pond’s touchdowns, using his legs instead of his arm. He scooted 18 yards for his second score.
While it amounted to another loss for the Bates’ era, the Broncos’ head coach saw promise in the effort of his players, citing this game as their most competitive yet.
“Our kids played their hearts out tonight,” he said. “This was our first full game.”
Holly Pond welcomes Susan Moore next Friday.
‰ West Point 31, Ardmore 6: The Warriors got going in the second half for the second straight week in a runaway road win over the Tigers.
Bryant Farley threw three touchdown passes, including two in the third quarter, to help West Point improve to 3-0.
Leading 7-6 at halftime, Kobe Smith returned the second half kickoff 76 yards for a touchdown to set the tone for a big third quarter.
“We knew we were getting the ball in the second half,” Warriors coach Don Farley said. “We talked about that and planned for it.”
Smith followed that with a 58-yard touchdown reception from Farley to make it 21-6. Farley’s 9-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Moore with seven seconds left in the quarter put the game out of reach.
The Warriors coach emphasized that an explosive second half wasn’t possible without halftime adjustments.
“Ardmore is a power-running team,” Farley said. “They kept our offense off the field. We made some adjustments to stop their running game.”
Farley said the offensive adjustments his team made were aimed at the Tigers’ attempts to shut down his team’s generally explosive ground attack.
“We have faith in our receivers and quarterback,” he said. “We came out and threw the ball.”
The first half was dominated by the home team, with Ardmore limiting the Warriors to 27 total yards through the first two quarters. After a scoreless first quarter, Ardmore took a 6-0 lead with a 1-yard Cody Fox run with 2:30 remaining in the second quarter.
Farley connected with Blake Yearwood for a 3-yard touchdown pass with 22 seconds left to take a 7-6 lead into halftime.
Farley finished the game 8 of 12 for 130 passing yards and three touchdowns. Garrett Miller competed 9 of 20 attempts with one interception for Ardmore.
Ricky Lowery was Ardmore’s leading rusher with 20 carries for 71 yards. West Point’s Tristin Skinner made a 44-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
West Point will take a perfect 2-0 mark in 5A, Region 8 into next week’s home opener against Pope John Paul II. The Warriors will celebrate the program’s 50th anniversary by honoring members of their first football team before the game.
‰ Oneonta 53, Good Hope 8: The Class 4A No. 8 Redskins jumped out to cushions of 19-0 and 40-0 after the first and second quarters en route to a dominant victory over the visiting Raiders.
Oneonta rolled up 450 yards of offense — 227 on the ground and 223 through the air — while limiting the high-powered Raider attack to just 181 total yards.
Ko Powell, in his first action after labrum surgery in the spring, ran nine times for 18 yards and two touchdowns and caught five passes for 118 yards and a score. It was his 71-yard catch-and-run that provided the first points for the Redskins.
Oneonta quarterback Zach Dimmock ran four times for 45 yards and a touchdown and completed 9-of-11 passing for 214 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. On defense, he picked off a pair of Good Hope passes.
Good Hope quarterback Riley Eisner was limited to just 11 completions in 28 attempts for 67 yards with three interceptions.
The Raiders’ points came on a 57-yard drive in the fourth quarter, capped off by a 1-yard run by junior Lee Whisenant. He also added the two-point conversion.
Whisenant led the Raider defense with seven tackles, including two for losses.
Good Hope hosts J.B. Pennington next Friday.
