ASWA RANKINGS: Addison, West Point inch closer to top-10 spots

- Alex Hernarndez (29) and Khristian Thompson (24) stroll to the sideline before West Point's region opener against Columbia.
Addison and West Point remain on the outside looking in of their respective top 10s following Tuesday’s release of the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s latest prep football poll.
The Bulldogs (2-2) only gained six votes by knocking then-No. 8 Falkville out of the Class 2A rankings with a 42-7 thumping last Friday on the road. Addison’s 13 votes are 22 behind No. 10 Lanett and only six ahead of the Blue Devils (2-1).
Tanner and Pickens County — the two teams Addison has lost to — were third and seventh in this week’s poll.
The Warriors inched closer to their first ranking since 1995 by securing a 3-0 start with a 31-6 smashing of Ardmore. West Point received 32 votes in 5A, five back of Beauregard in 11th and 35 shy of Region 8-mate East Limestone at No. 10. Russellville, another region contender, is fifth.
In 2012, Ramsay’s football team managed to do something it hadn’t done since 1976 — win a football game. Of course, that was the last year the Rams played a game, dropping the program after that season.
In its second season since restoring varsity football, the Rams managed to double their win total from Year 1.
In the fourth week of their third season, the Rams have managed to do something they haven’t since 1967 — make a top-10 appearance in a state football poll.
Ramsay, which has already matched its win total of the previous two seasons combined, debuted in this week’s 5A rankings at No. 8. Their last appearance, according to AHSFHS.org, was a No. 3 spot in an AHSAA poll on Sept. 27, 1967. Prior to that, it was a No. 9 mark to end the 1963 season in the Associated Press poll.
The 2014 Rams are still quite a distance behind top-ranked St. Paul — one of two unanimous No. 1’s this week — along with 4A leader Leeds.
Other classes are tighter with 3A Madison Academy and 2A Fyffe picking up 21 of 31 first-place votes, and 1A Brantley grabbing 22. Alabama Independent Schools Association leader Edgewood Academy had 30 of 31 first-place votes, with 7A Bob Jones earning 26 and 5A Spanish Fort, 28.
In games between ranked teams this week, 7A No. 1 Bob Jones is at No. 5 Gadsden City, No. 6 Prattville hosts No. 4 Central-Phenix City, 6A No 1. Spanish Fort hosts No. 8 Saraland, 3A No. 1 Madison Academy is at No. 8 Colbert County, No. 5 Glencoe hosts No. 3 Piedmont, 2A No. 2 Washington County is at No. 5 Sweet Water, 1A No. 4 Linden travels to No. 2 Maplesville, No. 8 Georgiana is at No. 9 McKenzie, No. 2 Restoration hosts No. 4 Monroe Academy, and No. 6 Marengo Academy is at No. 7 South Choctaw Academy.
