WEST POINT — The third quarter of West Point’s region contest against J.O. Johnson on Friday night will most likely keep Don Farley scanning through television reruns in the middle of the night.

And for good reason.

After a first-half defensive chess match, the second-year head coach watched in stunned silence as the Jaguars reeled off 34 points in the decisive frame to seize control of the bout and run away to a lopsided 40-10 road victory.

West Point dropped to 5-1 (3-1 in Class 5A, Region 8) with the loss, while Johnson moved to (3-3, 1-2) on the year.

“You saw what happened,” Farley said after the game. “They hit that big play on their first play, then we turned the ball over and that’s just when the wheels fell off. I didn’t have them ready to play football in the second half. That’s my fault.”

Leading 6-2, Jaguar quarterback Brandon Crosby found wideout Jarius Grayson down the right sideline for a 65-yard scoring strike to extend the cushion to 12-2 on the opening play of the second half.

On the ensuing kickoff, West Point’s Kobe Smith was unable to field the ball cleanly — leading to a turnover and a 12-yard scoring run by Mikus Peoples two plays later.

While the Warriors mustered just 19 total yards in the quarter, the Jags were in their finest groove of the season.

Lorenzo Mastin added 1- and 8-yard scoring runs before the final nail was driven into the Maroon and White’s coffin on a long, 96-yard touchdown toss from Desmond Johnson to Jamar Jackson. Jackson pulled in a middle post, broke a few tackles, spun away from a couple more and raced down the sideline to give his team a 38-point lead as time expired in the frame.

“They came out with some serious fight in that third quarter,” Farley said. “We lost our composure, and that was that.”

It wasn’t much better offensively for the Warriors, as the solid quarterback-tailback tandem of Bryant Farley and Smith accounted for two turnovers and was limited to just 79 total yards and one touchdown.

Farley was 7 of 16 through the air for 43 yards, a touchdown — a 7-yard slant to Will Wrenn late in the fourth quarter — and a pick. Smith had 36 yards on 14 carries, Cameron Moore added 40 yards on eight totes and Alex Hernandez garnered 27 yards on seven carries.

West Point had just 162 total yards, by far its lowest output of the year.

“They’re a really good defensive ballclub,” Farley said.

Peoples, Dominique McNealey, Mastin and Taryon Baker combined for 183 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 22 carries. Johnson will be at Ardmore next week.

Meanwhile, the Warriors will have to shake this one off quickly before next week’s region matchup against No. 4 Russellville, which fell 20-14 to No. 8 East Limestone for its first loss of the season.

According to Farley, that process starts in-house.

“It doesn’t matter how you lose,” he said. “40-39, 40-10. A loss is a loss. It doesn’t matter who comes in here next week, either. It’s going to be about us moving forward. We’ll get back out here tomorrow and fix the things we need to fix and get ready for next Friday.”
