County approves principal

The Cullman County Commission on Education unanimously approved a principal and assistant principal for West Point Middle School Tuesday.
The board approved Janice Brown, former assistant principal at West Point Middle, as interim principal at the school, while Clark Farley, a former history teacher at the Cullman Area Career Center, was hired as an assistant principal. Brown’s contract is effective from Jan. 2 until June 1.
Clark’s contract is effective Jan. 2 until June 8.
The board also unanimously approved Theresa Allen, former part-time counselor at Parkside School, to a full-time counselor at Parkside. Nancy Horton, former superintendent, was unanimously approved as a counselor and administrative assistant at the Children At Risk Education center.
Superintendent Hank Allen, presiding over his first school board meeting, said he received a warm welcome at the Central Office.
“Things are going really well, and I’m pleased by the reception I’ve received here at the Central Office,” he said. “I’m here to serve you.”
Allen said his main focus will be improving student achievement.
In other business, the board approved a construction change order for West Point Intermediate School. According to the school system, 6,000 square feet of parking space with paving will be added at the north end of the building at a cost of $14,923.
Also, 240 cubic yards of poor soil will be removed at the roadway, and poor soil will be replaced at a cost of $4,464. Bob Moody, the school’s principal, said recently the school is expected to be open by February.
