V. Katherine “Kate” Doss, 91, of Pinson died Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at St. Vincent’s East Hospital in Birmingham.

Mrs. Doss was born May 31, 1923, in Jefferson County to Leroy and Rosa Lee Layfield.  She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. She was an awesome wife, mother, grandmother and cook.

Visitation will be Saturday, November 1, 6-8 p.m. at The New Gardendale Funeral Home. Services will be November 2 also at The New Gardendale Funeral Home at 2 p.m. with Rev. Cam Price, Judge Mike Davis and Rev. Paul Phelps officiating.  Burial will be at Bethel Cemetery in Warrior.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leroy and Rosa Layfield; one brother, Freddie Layfield; two sister:  Ruth Simmons and Belle Holt.

Survivors include her loving husband of 72 years, Chester H. “Hutchie” Doss; two sons:  Larry Doss (Patsy); Gary Doss (Kathy); two daughters:  Denise Davis (Mike); Lee Ann O’Toole (Mike); special niece and like a daughter Karen Mulvehill (Gerald); 21 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild.  Four sisters-in-law, Alice McCombs, Carol Doss, Merle Gibbons, and Corine Reid; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends and church family.  

Pallbearers will be grandsons: Greg Doss; Keith Doss; Brian Doss; Wes Coleman; John Michael O’Toole; Caleb O’Toole; James Thomas and Kevin Smith. Honorary Pallbearers: Neal Elrod and Earl Kelley.

Memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church.
