HUNTSVILLE — Two local volleyball programs with plenty of state tournament experience moved one step closer to clinching their latest appearances on Day 1 of the North Super Regional.
Top-ranked Addison crushed Southeastern 25-3, 25-5, 25-5 in a Class 2A opener, while Good Hope held on for a 25-16, 25-12, 22-25, 25-23 victory over Wilson in 4A action Friday at the Von Braun Center.
St. Bernard had the upset of the early stages, however, eliminating 1A, Area 14 tourney champion Belgreen in straight sets (25-11, 25-15, 25-21). Holly Pond’s campaign came to a close with a four-set loss to No. 10 Colbert Heights in 3A (25- 23, 13-25, 18-25, 18-25).
The three triumphant squads will resume play on Saturday needing just one win to advance to next week’s Elite Eight. A state berth would be the 13th straight for Pam Wilkins’s Bulldogs and the 13th for the Raiders under longtime coach Rosemary Brown.
Good Hope (36-16) will take on Brooks, which cruised by Carbon Hill, Saturday at 9 a.m. Addison (51-2) will face No. 10 West End, which swept Fyffe, at 10:30 a.m. The Saints will play No. 7 Spring Garden at 1:30 p.m.
