- Cullman's Ross Crocker hands off to Will Crenshaw during the second half of Friday's 28-7 homecoming win over Athens. Crocker threw for 265 yards and two touchdowns, while Crenshaw ran for 91 yards and two scores.
Michael Lambert and Chris Richards took Holly Pond’s record books and put pen to paper on some new high marks following last week’s game against Winston County.
Despite a 35-27 loss to the Yellow Jackets, the quarterback-wide receiver duo made some sublime noise for the Broncos in the Class 3A, Region 5 contest.
Lambert completed 18 of 29 passes for 429 yards, four first-half touchdowns and zero interceptions. Richards caught five of the sophomore signal-caller’s heaves for 220 yards and three touchdowns — 20, 82 and 92 yards, respectively. The two totals paced a new school record for passing and receiving yards in a single game.
The accomplishment also secured the duo some recognition in the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Week 7 list of “other notable performances,” as well as the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Prep Spotlight package.
Lambert was one of three finalists for Prep Spotlight honors, which was split between Cullman and Brooks for some pretty wowing performances. Richards, meanwhile, was mentioned alongside his quarterback in the AHSAA’s weekly collection.
Lambert was joined on the ASWA’s and AHSAA’s lists by Addison’s Kolby Kirk and Cullman’s Seth Donaldson.
Kirk turned 24 totes into 191 rushing yards and two touchdowns (50 and 28 yards) in the Bulldogs’ 30-7 home and region victory over Cold Springs. Donaldson caught six passes for 123 yards by halftime and finished with nine receptions — most for third-down conversions — in the Bearcats’ 28-7 homecoming win against Athens.
The crazy start to that Cullman triumph — the ’Cats piled on three touchdowns before Athens’ first offensive snap with 2:49 left in the first quarter — earned them a share of the AHSAA’s Prep Spotlight.
Cullman drained the first 7:03 of clock with a 16-play, 83-yard scoring drive — Will Crenshaw capped it off with a 2-yard scoring run — and then recovered loose balls on the Golden Eagles’ next two kickoff returns to keep the defense on the sideline almost the entire opening quarter. Ross Crocker and Dawson Drake took advantage of the first turnover with a 21-yard touchdown connection. Crenshaw capitalized on the second with a 3-yard scoring scamper. Michael Al-Dijaili and Sam Calligaris recovered the fumbled kickoff returns.
Crocker finished 18-of-29 passing for 265 yards and two touchdowns. The second score was a 45-yard bomb to Owen Lovell as time expired in the first half.
Brooks snagged its share of the Prep Spotlight by intercepting a state record-tying eight passes in its 38-0 win over East Lawrence. The picks were spread among five players, with Brandon Atkinson, Kolton Medley and Andrew Rainey swiping two apiece. Matthew Rainey and Joe Gurley both had one. Talladega County Central also had eight interceptions in its 25-14 win over White Plains in 1999.
Mortimer Jordan quarterback Duncan Hodges delivered a fine outing in a 61-21 win against Alexandria to nab ASWA’s Offensive Player of the Week. He completed 21 of 24 passes for 427 yards and six touchdowns, while adding 10 carries for 68 yards to push Blue Devils to 6-0 this season.
Hodges edged standout showings from the two offensive finalists — Opp’s Orlando Lacey and Cleveland’s Peyton Gilliland — to win the weekly award.
Lacey rushed for rushed for 218 yards on 13 carries and had three rushing touchdowns in a 51-42 victory over T.R. Miller. He also accounted for a 40-yard scoop-and-score on a kickoff return for the game’s final touchdown.
Gilliland rushed 14 times for 203 yards and five TDs (8, 29, 4, 9, 61 yards) and completed 8 of 15 throws for 120 yards in a 48-35 victory over Susan Moore. On defense, he picked off two passes, one of which he returned 102 yards for a score.
This week’s ASWA Defense/Special Teams Player of the Week was A.L. Johnson’s Jeremy Mitchell, who picked off two passes and returned both for touchdowns of 55 and 30 yards in a win over Keith. The finalists were Houston Academy’s Marshall Powell and Central-Hayneville’s Alex Bryant.
Powell connected on field goals of 38 and 34 yards, made an extra point and returned three punts for 110 yards (64, 34 and 3 yards), while also scoring on a 9-yard TD run in a 29-28 double-overtime victory over Samson. Bryant returned an interception 99 yards for a TD and added a 45-yard TD pass and a 1-yard TD run in a 22-14 victory Zion Chapel.
