Weather: Normal. Mostly sunny skies today with highs in the upper 50s. There’s a 20 percent chance of scattered showers tonight, with lows down to the middle 30s. Wednesday will be mostly sunny again, with highs in the upper 50s.
Big plans for new Gardendale center. The city of Gardendale has extended its contract with Preferred Growth Properties for the new development now known as Magnolia City Center. According to a press release issued Monday night, the development will include “a top-tier nationally recognized retailer” as the anchor, though the statement did not identify the retailer. PGP redeveloped the old Northgate shopping center into Magnolia City Place, home to the new T.J. Maxx and Publix.
Ferguson in flames. Rioting and looting erupted in the St. Louis suburb Monday night, after a grand jury announced that a police officer would not be criminally charged in the shooting of a black teenager. Gunfire was rampant throughout the area, police cars were torched, and several businesses were burned despite the presence of additional police.
Sports: Locust Fork, Hayden sweep. Both girls’ and boys’ basketball teams won their games Monday night, with the Hornets routing Cleveland; Jamie Gail Hudson got a double-double for the girls in their 71-28 rout, taking the team record to 6-0. The Wildcat girls came from behind to edge Good Hope 45-42, while the boys won 68-40 to run their unbeaten streak to four games.
