According to Gardendale Police Lt. Bryan Lynch, the man was driving a Ford pickup truck. The driver was declared dead at the scene by Gardendale Fire and Rescue personnel.

The railroad crossing at McCormack Drive is protected only by stop signs, with no signals or gates. The rail line there has two tracks; it’s the former Louisville and Nashville Railroad’s main line between Nashville and Birmingham. The crossing is about three miles north of Boyles Yard, the major train classification yard for CSX in Birmingham.

The name of the deceased has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.
