David Standridge, the former Blount County commission president and probate judge who won a special election for the District 34 seat in the Alabama House of Representatives last year, has announced that he will run for a full term in the coming election.

Standridge, a Republican who lives in Hayden, made the announcement Monday on his Facebook page.

District 34 currently includes most of the southern part of Blount County, including Hayden and Locust Fork, and a very small portion of northern Jefferson County around Warrior and Corner.

Those boundaries will change in the next election, as the Jefferson County portion reverts to District 51 and Rep. Allen Treadaway (R-Morris). Additionally, the far western tip of Blount County that lies west of Interstate 65 will move into District 13, which primarily covers the eastern part of Walker County and is represented by Bill Roberts (R-Jasper).

Standridge won the seat in a GOP primary runoff on December 11, 2013, defeating Oneonta businessman Chris Latta. He faced no Democrat opposition in a general election. The election became necessary when Rep. Elwyn Thomas was appointed to the Alabama Manufactured Housing Commission by Gov. Robert Bentley and had to resign his seat.

Previously, Standridge was one of three primary challengers to U.S. Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-Vestavia Hills) in 2012. He placed third behind Bachus and State Sen. Scott Beason (R-Gardendale).
