A Fultondale man was killed in a one-car accident near Arkadelphia on Monday.
Christopher Brakefield, 27, died after the 2005 Honda he was driving left County Road 35 and struck a tree shortly after 11 a.m. He was reportedly not wearing a seat belt.
“He hit a massive tree,” Cullman County Coroner Gary Murphree said. Murphree said the wet roads and curve in the road probably caused the accident.
According to Sgt. Randy Christian of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, a sheriff’s deputy pulled Brakefield over during a traffic stop near Corner High School. When the deputy returned to his vehicle, Brakefield allegedly left the scene. Christian said Brakefield had an outstanding warrant for probation violation on a robbery charge.
The deputy stopped pursuit shortly thereafter because of wet road conditions.
The accident is still under investigation by the Alabama Department of Public Safety.
