Softball: Mortimer Jordan sweeps tri-series against Briarwood Christian, Pisgah

Mortimer Jordan was able to get a pair of wins over Briarwood Christian and Pisgah in a Friday softball tri-series, but had to pull of some late-game heroics in both contests to get the victories.

The Blue Devils won 3-2 against the Lions, and 6-5 over the Eagles.

In the opener against the Lions, the Devils were down 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth, but then hit three straight doubles by Shelby Maze, Kristen Putnam and Bailey Murphy to score three times.

Lead-off batter Morgan Reed put Briarwood on the board in the first when she reached base on an error, stole second and came home on successive ground-outs. The Lions scored again in the fifth when Maleigh Miller scored on a Dee Simon ground-out.

Jordan’s Natalie Johnsey pitched a one-hitter, striking out eight Lions in one of her best outings of the season.

Maze was 2-for-2 at the plate, and also reached on an error.

In the nightcap with Pisgah, Bailey Murphy struck out 11 Eagles batters, but the two teams battled back and forth on the basepaths. It took a lead-off triple in the sixth by Maze to set up the winning run; she came home on a sacrifice bunt by Morgan Cantrell.

Maze went 3-for-4 with two triples and a single, and scored all three times she reached base.

Lillie McCrary put the Eagles in front with a two-run homer in the first. She also had a single, and got on base with a walk and an error.

Carly Hodo hit a sacrifice fly in the third that scored Murphy, who got on board with a walk and moved over on a hit by Alexandra Copeland.

Baylee Rogers put Pisgah up 5-3 with a two-run double in the fifth.

Jordan tied the game with three runs in the fifth, highlighted by a Murphy two-run homer over the right field fence.Alexandra Copeland followed that with a hot,and worked her way across the plate on a Hodo double, a walk to Alyssa Lang and a bases-loaded walk to Abagail Crane.

Jordan (11-6) hosts Walker in an area game on Tuesday.
