Pinson Valley pitcher Hunter Davidson has the leg kick going during Saturday's Jefferson County Schools Tournament championship game at Clay-Chalkville. Davidson came up on the losing end of a 5-3 score.

Solid hitting by Clay-Chalkville, coupled with some misplays by Pinson Valley, were the main factors in the Cougars’ 5-3 comeback victory in the championship game of the Jefferson County Schools Baseball Tournament on Saturday evening.

Clay-Chalkville scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good, in what had been a back-and-forth contest to that point. After filling the bases on a walk by Indians starting pitcher Hunter Davidson and two straight base hits, right fielder Matthew Calvert – who had pitched a no-hitter the night before against Pleasant Grove to get the Cougars into the title game – hit into a double play that brought home Les Keyes.

A Josh Jackson hit then drove in the go-ahead run, and then he scored on a single by Braxton Parvin, thanks to some outfield confusion on the Tribe’s part. Parvin was thrown out trying to get to second while Jackson scored, but the damage was done.

Davidson got into trouble again in the fifth when Clay-Chalkville loaded the bases, and by that time coach Shane Chappell had seen enough, bringing in Raul Tafoya out of the bullpen to get the last out of the inning.

Pinson took the early lead thanks to three straight errors by Cougar shortstop Tyler Duke. Those allowed lead-off hitter Destin Davidson to get on base, then reach second on an overthrow, and finaly score when his Destin’s brother Hunter hit a grounder to Duke that was bobbled.

Clay got the run back when catcher Kyle Mosley scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Darian Baldwin. The Cougars almost took the lead later in the inning when Keyes reached on an outfielder error, and pitcher Thomas Johns was waved around third base by coach Bubba Patterson. That’s a call that Paterson probably wanted back, as Johns was thrown out at home plate to end the inning.

The bottom of the batting order came through for Pinson in the second inning, when Brett Jordan led off with a hit, then Brent Stephens lined a double to left. Jacob Brown, hitting in the ninth spot, brought both runners home when he cracked a hard single through the gap into left center field.

That would prove to be about all the offense that the Tribe could muster, as Johns held them to just one hit – a single by Brown in the seventh – for the rest of the game. The Cougar hurler steadied himself, and finished the night with four hits allowed on three runs, two earned. He struck out two batters, walked two others and hit three with pitches.

Hunter Davidson took the loss, giving up 10 hits in 4-2/3 innings. He also struck out two and walked two.

Parvin, the ninth hitter in the Clay-Chalkville (10-3) lineup, finished the night 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs. Mosley was 2-for-4.

Brown’s 2-for-3 effort was tops for Pinson.
