A pre-trial hearing, which was to determine whether former pastor Terry Greer is competent to stand trial for the murder of his wife, has been delayed.

The hearing was scheduled to be held before Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge Tommy Nail on Wednesday, but was postponed because Nail became ill Tuesday.

Nail was scheduled to hear testimony from a state mental health expert on whether Greer is mentally competent to stand trial, or should instead be sent to a mental health facility for treatment. A new date for the hearing is not yet set.

Greer, the former pastor of Gardendale-Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, is charged in the January 2013 death of his wife Lisa as well as the attempted murder of their daughter, Suzanna. Police reports said Suzanna wrestled the gun away from her father after he shot her mother, and that he then tried to commit suicide by stabbing himself repeatedly. The incident took place at he church parsonage in north Gardendale.

Defense attorneys contend that Terry Greer’s actions stem from a traffic accident and a fall from a deck at the parsonage in the four months prior to the shooting. Nail had originally set a hearing for February, but then cancelled it and set a trial date for July. Nail then changed his mind and reset the hearing.
