News flash: The dash of the pickup truck is not a proper place to store farm receipts. If this revelation hits a little too close to home, make plans to attend the Alabama Cooperative Extension System’s Essentials of Farm Taxes and Estate Planning Seminar.
Dennis Brothers, an associate Extension professor with Alabama Extension at Auburn University, said the seminar will address many of the topics surrounding taxes and estate planning and how farmers can better plan for their operation.
“Attendees can expect to learn better ways to prepare their business financials and improve their tax strategies, such as how to optimize depreciation and which tax forms to fill out,” Brothers said. “Also, estate planning is one of those areas we all need to address but often don’t know where to start. We will try to answer that question, too.”

There are three opportunities to attend this seminar, Aug. 11, 12 and 13 in Dothan, Prattville and Cleveland, respectively. The seminar will start at 5:30 p.m. each night, and a boxed dinner will be provided. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required and must be completed online before Aug. 1. To register and for specific venue details, visit aces.edu/go/5055.
The farm taxes portion of the seminar will be taught by Adam Kantrovich, an agribusiness tax specialist with Clemson Cooperative Extension. Katie Keown, a visiting agriculture law professor at Auburn University, will cover topics related to estate planning. Brothers said he is excited to have both experts be a part of the seminar.
“Adam has been my go-to guy for ag taxes for a long time,” Brothers said. “He has tremendous experience working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and other government agencies regarding ag tax issues. Katie is a farm girl who turned attorney for the sole purpose of helping farmers and ranchers navigate the legal issues facing farms today. Estate planning and farm succession issues are at the top on her list of specialties.”
