‘EMOTIONAL ROLLER COASTER’: Archer’s walk-off hit sends Cold Springs to postseason

Cold Springs’ playoff hopes teetered late Friday night.
Down to their last three outs and facing a three-run deficit, the Eagles needed to put together one final push to accomplish one of their preseason goals.
That’s exactly what they did.
Boston Archer’s two-run single capped a four-run seventh inning, lifting Cold Springs to a 6-5 victory over Winston County and punching its ticket to the Class 2A playoffs.
The Eagles, behind a stellar pitching effort from Cooper Johnson, defeated the Yellow Jackets 5-0 earlier in the day to force a winner-take-all matchup in the Area 11 series.
“It was an emotional roller coaster,” Cold Springs coach Brendan Voce said, “but I’m just so proud of these guys. Cooper pitched amazingly and our defense made so many fantastic plays to secure that first win. In the second game, it would have been easy for our guys to just hang their heads and quit after Winston County scored those four runs, but they didn’t. They never quit believing in each other.”
The Blue and Gold held a 2-1 lead in the nightcap before Winston County plated four runs in the top half of the seventh to build a 5-2 advantage.
Voce’s squad, however, didn’t miss a beat.
Brady Phillips singled to lead off the frame and Ayden Black followed with a walk. Phillips later came around to score on a balk before a Matt Williams RBI single made it 5-4.
An intentional walk to Lindan Hill one batter later loaded the bases for Archer, who drove a 3-2 pitch to right field for the game-winning hit.
