Cullman City Schools CFO honored with 2025 Morton-Smith Award

James Brumley, Chief School Financial Officer at Cullman City Schools, has been awarded the 2025 Morton-Smith Award by the Alabama Association of School Business Officials (AASBO). This recognition celebrates Brumley’s exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication to the field of educational finance.
The Morton-Smith Award, now in its 15th year, acknowledges individuals who have demonstrated outstanding commitment and proficiency in school financial management. Brumley’s extensive expertise spans more than 23 years in governmental accounting, with a 12-year tenure as CSFO in two different school systems. He graduated from the University of North Alabama with dual majors in Accounting and Management.
In his current role, Brumley oversees critical aspects of school operations including finance and budgeting, transportation, child nutrition and facilities maintenance.
“Mr. Brumley has played an integral role in our ongoing safety and growth capital campaign,” said superintendent Kyle Kallhoff. “His leadership and diligent work behind the scenes have been pivotal in securing essential funding for our school projects.”
Board President Amy Carter added, “We are delighted to see James recognized with the Morton-Smith Award from AASBO. His reputation as one of the finest School Financial Officers in the state is well-deserved.”
As part of this honor, Brumley will award a $2,000 AASBO sponsored scholarship to a deserving high school student.
