Potter Tim Whitten to make Bloomin’ Festival debut

The 41st Annual Bloomin’ Festival at St. Bernard Prep School is set to welcome a talented new artisan to its lineup this year. Tim Whitten, a potter from Decatur, Alabama, will be showcasing his work for the first time at the festival on April 5-6, 2025.

Whitten’s journey into pottery began over a decade ago when he was drawn to the folk pottery traditions of the Carolinas and North Georgia. What started as a passion for collecting soon turned into a calling to create. In 2010, he sat at a potter’s wheel for the first time, and since then, he has devoted himself to crafting pieces that embody the rich cultural heritage of southern Appalachia. His work is particularly inspired by the distinctive face jugs that have long been a hallmark of regional folk art.

Though largely self-taught, Whitten credits the support and generosity of the folk-art community for shaping his path. “The raw, handmade nature of folk pottery speaks to me in a way that is immediate and profound,” he shares. “Each piece tells a story, carrying meaning and connecting people across time and place.” His work balances tradition with personal exploration, blending time-honored forms with unique textures and expressions.
