The 41st Annual Bloomin’ Festival welcomes first-time exhibitors Tim and Dorothy Glover of Iron City, Tennessee, whose agate rock candles are sure to captivate festival-goers. Inspired by a trip to Gatlinburg, Dorothy’s love for a unique rock candle sparked an unexpected passion that turned into a business — Papa T’s Candles.
After retiring from the drug task force in Lauderdale County, Tim never imagined he would spend his days cutting and crafting rock candles. However, at Dorothy’s encouragement, he took on the challenge and together, they now create one-of-a-kind pieces using agate and amethyst sourced from Arizona, New Mexico, Kentucky and even Brazil.
Each candle begins as a carefully selected slab of rock. Tim expertly drills and seals a reservoir at the bottom, fitting it with a permanent fiberglass wick designed for lifelong use. Customers receive a sample bottle of oil with each purchase and can easily refill their candles using a colorless, odorless lamp oil — though scented oils can be added for a custom aroma. Prices range from $45 to $250, reflecting the uniqueness of each handcrafted piece.
Beyond candles, the Glovers make the most of every rock. Tim transforms leftover end pieces into wire tree sculptures, an art form that not only repurposes materials, but also helps alleviate the pain of his neuropathy.
Dorothy is proud of her husband and is happy handling all bookkeeping and administration. She ensures that production runs smoothly while continuing to work her full-time job.
Encouraged to join the Bloomin’ Festival by longtime basketmaker Leonda Whetstone, the Glovers are excited to share their rock creations with the community. Be sure to visit their booth and discover the natural artistry behind Papa T’s Candles at St. Bernard Prep School on April 5-6.
