City of Cullman unveils first green area for parking

The city of Cullman has completed its first-ever green parking lot.

According to a press release from the city, the lot marks a step towards sustainable urban development with the Low Impact Development project showcasing the city’s commitment to “environmental stewardship and efficient land use.”

The new parking lot, located at the corner of 2nd Ave NE & Young Street NE, features:

— 193 total parking spots, including 8 ADA-compliant spaces
— 100% pervious surface, allowing for natural water infiltration
— Heavy-duty grid system capable of supporting loads more than 5,000 lbs.
— 10 newly planted oak trees for enhanced aesthetics and shade
— The parking lot’s heavy-duty grid system is backfilled with topsoil and seeded to create a fully permeable surface.

“This innovative approach maximizes parking capacity while eliminating the need for traditional stormwater management systems, which often consume valuable real estate,” Cullman Mayor Woody Jacobs said.

According to the press release, the green parking lot offers numerous benefits inlcuding:

— Reduced stormwater runoff and improved water quality
— Enhanced aesthetic appeal with integrated vegetation
— Efficient land use without compromising parking capacity

Officials said that by implementing this LID parking solution, “Cullman joins the ranks of forward-thinking municipalities embracing sustainable stormwater management practices. This project not only addresses immediate parking needs but also contributes to long-term environmental and community benefits.”
