PREP ROUNDUP: West Point holds off Russellville for 1st area tournament title since 2015

West Point’s varsity boys crafted a big lead early and held off Russellville late, claiming a 59-53 triumph on Tuesday night to collect the Class 5A, Area 15 Tournament title — the program’s first such crown since the 2014-15 season.

The Warriors (21-7) led 29-12 at halftime, but the Golden Tigers didn’t go quietly.

Russellville chipped away at that deficit over the final 16 minutes, eventually drawing to within a single point (54-53) in the waning moments.

But the home team got no closer.

Jaxon Shelton sank a free throw and West Point came up with a pair of crucial defensive stops which led to outlet buckets that sealed the victory.

“I’m just proud of the guys,” Warriors  coach Mason Voce said. “We dealt with some adversity, but we didn’t flinch. Great effort tonight … and we stayed together. Winning the first area title in 10 years is special.”
