Patrons of the Hanceville Public Library are now able to return their books more conveniently thanks to a new exterior book return donated in recognition of the service of retired librarian Shirley Burden.

The city of Hanceville previously announced the library would be renamed “The Shirley Burden Public Library” during the long-time librarian’s retirement party in November 2024.

Burden had led the library for nearly 20 years and grew its reading program in the process, becoming a beloved local figure within the Hanceville community.

The new book return will be yet another testament to the lasting impression Burden has left. In a press release sent to The Times, Wednesday, Jan, 15, newly appointed library manager Teresa Rivera said its installation was made possible by Cullman County Library Director Amber Thornton and was done in honor of Burden.

The library also announced plans for future activities which include:

— Adult Bingo day beginning at 1 p.m. one Tuesday each month.

— Book readings and signings from local authors.

— A children’s Valentine’s Day party in February.

— Expanded activities for teenagers.

“We look forward to continuing to serve the community of Hanceville and have fun while doing it,” Rivera said in the release
