ALL-COUNTY FOOTBALL TEAM: Fairview’s Harper named Overall MVP; Cone, Bagwell, Gambrill and Redding notch other top honors

Published 6:21 pm Wednesday, December 4, 2024

Jake Harper ripped through and muscled his way past opposing defenses all season.

And because of that, the choice was clear for Cullman County’s seven football coaches.

Following an outstanding junior season, Harper earned Overall MVP honors on this year’s All-County Football Team.

Good Hope’s Tyler Cone (Offensive MVP), Good Hope’s Landon Bagwell (Defensive MVP), Fairview’s Germaine Gambrill (Lineman of the Year) and Fairview’s George Redding (Coach of the Year), meanwhile, claimed the other top accolades.

All-State will be announced by the Alabama Sports Writers Association, of which The Times is a voting member, later this month.

All-Area, which is selected by The Times and includes both Addison and Cullman, will be unveiled in January.

See below for the complete All-County Football Team, including honorable mentions, as decided by coaches.

Overall MVP

Name: Jake Harper

School: Fairview

Class: Junior

Highlights: Compiled 1,988 yards and 29 touchdowns on 168 carries — 11.8 yards per carry. Totaled 49.5 tackles and three sacks on defense.

Coach Speak: “Jake is one of our hardest-working guys and takes a lot of pride in improving himself, but he’s always willing to love on others. He shared carries with Carson Jones, who had more than 800 yards rushing, and Kolt Redding, who had nearly 600 yards rushing. There were potentially a lot more yards he could have gotten, but Jake understands the team concept and that we need everybody in order to be successful.” — George Redding

Offensive MVP

Name: Tyler Cone

School: Good Hope

Class: Senior

Highlights: Completed 71 of 116 passes for 1,309 yards and 16 touchdowns. Compiled 871 yards and 14 touchdowns on 159 carries.

Coach Speak: “I just can’t say enough about Tyler and what he did for the team this season stepping in like he did. He’s been preparing for that moment for three years, and when he stepped in and took over this offense like he did, we just clicked. He had a phenomenal year. More than that, he’s a great young man and leader. He always has a positive attitude and tries to put the team first.” — Alan Scott

Defensive MVP

Name: Landon Bagwell

School: Good Hope

Class: Senior

Highlights: Totaled 114 solo tackles, 55 assisted tackles, 27.5 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, seven quarterback pressures and a defensive score.

Coach Speak: “Landon may be the fastest linebacker we’ve ever had here at Good Hope — and he certainly has the most tackles. He worked his tail off for years to get to this point and to watch him have the success he did this year was awesome. I was extremely proud of his effort every single game. His motor was unbelievable and he wanted to make every tackle … and he made a lot of them.” — Alan Scott

Lineman of the Year

Name: Germaine Gambrill

School: Fairview

Class: Senior

Highlights: Spearheaded an offensive line that paved the way for 3,613 rushing yards and 45 touchdowns. Totaled 43.5 tackles on defense.

Coach Speak: “What Germaine brought to the table week in and week out was second to none for us. He might be outmatched size-wise at times, but he’s never outmatched with strength, technique and his will to be successful. We used him in so many ways this year, but especially along the defensive line in offsetting some strengths of the other teams we played. Two years ago, he was just a running back. To think about the transition he’s made and the impact he’s had on our team is unbelievable.” — George Redding

Coach of the Year

Name: George Redding

School: Fairview

Highlights: Led the Aggies (10-2) to the Class 5A, Region 7 title en route to the program’s first-ever undefeated season.
