New Market, Ala. man arrested in connection to Dec. 1 traffic fatality

Cullman police have made an arrest in the Dec. 1 traffic incident that left a man dead.
According to a press release from the Cullman Police Department, at approximately 3:32 p.m. Tuesday, Dec 3, officers responded to a report of a white Nissan Altima linked to the death of Mark Alan Johns, 59. The vehicle was located at Apel Steel on US-Hwy 31.
Michael Garrett Massie, 35, of New Market, Alabama, was arrested for felony leaving the scene of the crash on AL-69 near AL-157. The investigation is ongoing, and further charges may be filed.
“I would like to personally thank the great citizens and wonderful community for their quick action and support in assisting Cullman Police Department with this case,” Police Chief Joey Duncan said. “I would also like to thank the Cullman County District Attorney’s Office and the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this case.”
A separate fatality occurred Dec. 2 when a currently unidentified pedestrian was struck and killed on Alabama Hwy. 157 between Home2 Suites and the North Walmart super center.
Limited information is available due to the ongoing nature of the investigation. However, when speaking to The Times Tuesday, Dec. 3, city officials confirmed the driver involved in the second crash was on the scene at the time police arrived.
