Spending an autumn day crisscrossing the rural countryside while chatting with local farmers about what makes Cullman County agriculture tick — it’s a pleasant and informative way to greet the approaching end of October, all while gaining perspective on the area’s diverse economic life in both urban spaces and beyond.
On Wednesday, Oct. 30, the Cullman Farm City Committee will set out on its annual Farm Tour, taking guests along for a grown-up field trip that includes informative visits at several local farms. The focus this year is on the western side of Cullman County, as well as a stop at a local manufacturing industry, with the tour beginning and ending at the Cullman County Extension Office (402 Arnold Street NE, Suite G-1 in Cullman).
Tickets for the half-day tour are $15 per person, and include transportation to all the day’s destinations as well as lunch. Space on the tour is limited; while they remain available, tickets can purchased at the Cullman at the County Economic Development Office (200 First Avenue NE in Cullman). Contact the Economic Development office at 256-775-4696 or Kathy Holmes at 256-734-1431 with questions about the event.
The Farm Tour serves as an educational appetizer for the Farm City Committee’s main annual event: The Nov. 21 Farm City banquet that celebrates a local family who exemplifies the organization’s emphasis on rural-urban interdependence. This year’s banquet is themed with a focus on local farmers, recognizing the vital role they play in shaping the Cullman area’s economy and community culture.
The Nov. 21 banquet will be held at Loft 212 in Cullman, beginning at 5 p.m. with a silent auction and entertainment, followed by dinner at 6 p.m. and the awarding of prizes for this year’s best student-made Farm City posters, as well as the naming of the students of the year.
Proceeds from the silent auction will benefit Cullman Caring for Kids, the Pilot Light Home, Curt’s Closet and the Good Samaritan Health Clinic. Banquet tickets are $30 per person and can be purchased in person at Citizens Bank and Trust branches in downtown Cullman or Alabama Highway 157, as well as online at givebutter.com/farm-city24.
