Stony Lonesome braces for big Jeep Jamboree weekend

}If you’re an off-road rider who plans on putting in a little dirt time this weekend at Cullman’s Stony Lonesome OHV Park, well — expect a lot of fancy Jeeps to be keeping you company out on the trails.
On Friday and Saturday, the county-operated park will once again play host to the 12th Stony Lonesome Jeep Jamboree, an annual outing that brings Jeep enthusiasts from all throughout the South (and beyond) to the 1,473-acre off-roaders’ paradise.
A signature national stop on the Jeep-sponsored circuit of year-long activities that celebrate the ownership culture of one of America’s most iconic automotive brands, the Jamboree is pitched more toward participants than spectators — and, as luck would have it, registration is already full for this year’s Stony Lonesome event.
But county parks director Kenneth Cornelius said the Jamboree attracts tons of visitors’ interest to Cullman — all while making a significant annual economic impact on the Dodge City area, as well as all of Cullman County.
“It’s a huge economic boon for the whole County,” said Cornelius. “We have people come here from all over — and spend a lot of money — for this event.
“It’s not just your typical gathering of folks who might have an old rusted Jeep sitting out in their backyard,” he added. “It’s people who put a lot of money and care into their vehicles. They’ll stay in local hotels; they’ll eat locally; and best of all, they share it with their friends and on social media — and that raises a lot of additional interest in what we have going on at the park.”
According to a Jeep press release, the event’s most popular ride, by far, is the Jeep Wrangler: A full 92 percent of all Jamboree participants, says the company, show up sporting the unmistakeable silhouette of the boxy 4×4.
Most of those, of course, are heavily modified for the kind of grueling stress that recreational trails like Stony Lonesome’s demand — but as Cornelius notes, the park itself will remain open for regular local riders (and their own bespoke rigs) on both Saturday and Sunday while the Jamboree is taking place.
