A suspected carjacking culminated at the intersection of AL Highway 31 and U.S. Highway 278 Sunday, Sept. 1, and resulted in two people hospitalized for gunshot wounds.

A statement from the city of Cullman said it was believed the car jacking originated within the county and that the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office was in the process of conducting a criminal investigation with assistance from the Cullman Police Department.

“Tonight’s events ended with two individuals in medical care. We are still investigating this incident. At this time, there is no threat to the community. Please, pray for all involved. The CCSO is investigating this incident and the CPD will cooperate in any means necessary. The city of Cullman would like to thank the CPD for handling this incident with empathy and compassion,” the statement said.

CPD officers had previously responded to a separate, unrelated incident earlier Sunday morning in which one individual was found dead and another detained “for his own welfare.”

According to a statement from the city, the incident does not appear to have been criminally related and the deceased, a 53 year-old male, had died from a medical issue.

“The incident, which was not a standoff, that occurred has been safely handled. We want to thank our local law enforcement officers for their hard work and attention to detail. A non-physical, domestic dispute occurred in which it was determined that the individual in question should be probated for his own welfare. CPD take mental health very seriously and diligently work to ensure that each individual needing assistance gets the help he or she needs to live a thriving and productive life in this community,” the statement said.

No further details on either incident were made available as of press time.
