Ethan Day threw a pair of touchdown passes, Cold Springs’ defense stood tall throughout most of the game and the Eagles earned a 24-14 road triumph against Curry on Thursday night.
With the victory, Cold Springs improved to 2-0 for the third straight season under coach Brendan Voce.
“Never underestimate a win,” he said. “I didn’t feel like we played our best, but a lot of that was Curry. They did a great job of being physical — came out and hit us in the mouth. Never got a rhythm on offense, but we’re tickled to be 2-0. We know we’ve got a lot of work to do to get prepared for region play.”
The Eagles opened the scoring in the first quarter, grabbing an 8-0 lead following a touchdown pass from Day to Cason Alexander and subsequent 2-point conversion by Matt Williams. Cold Springs added another touchdown later in the frame on a short toss from Day to Mason Gable.
That score followed a Curry touchdown drive and was set up by a lengthy connection from Day to Alexander. Williams’ second 2-point run gifted the road team a 16-7 lead that held until late in the fourth quarter when a touchdown scamper (Williams) and 2-point conversion (Tycen Kilgo) punctuated a 99-yard scoring drive and put the Blue and Gold in front 24-7 with less than five minutes remaining.
Curry added a late touchdown, but the Eagles held on to down the Yellow Jackets for a third straight year.
Williams finished with 112 yards on 20 carries, Day completed 4 of 6 passes for 126 yards and Alexander had two receptions for 100 yards. Cooper Johnson recovered a fumble on defense as well.
Cold Springs hosts Susan Moore next week in its home/region opener, seeking its first 3-0 start since 2020.
