GOOD HOPE — With area municipalities preparing to adopt new budgets next month for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, the city of Good Hope is eyeing possible tweaks before approving a final budget next month.
At its regular meeting Monday, the Good Hope City Council discussed a number of possible adjustments as the city projects its local revenues and expenses for the coming budget year, but took no action on any budget measure in favor of refining a final draft of the document that’s due for approval in September.
While city leaders expect no major changes, councilmembers discussed the possibility of allotting $1,000 apiece in additional funds next year from the city’s alcohol tax fund to boost its current municipal contribution to Good Hope’s primary, elementary and middle schools. Alternately, the council also weighed whether the same funds might better be used via a discretionary account that affords the city more spending flexibility.
None of the discussed options was put to a vote at Monday’s council meeting, and the city has until Sept. 30 to adopt a budget for the upcoming fiscal year. The fiscal year runs from Oct. 1 of 2024 to Sept. 30 of 2025. Additional budget considerations will be taken up at the council’s next regular meeting in early September.
In other business at its regular meeting, the council:
— Adopted a resolution approving the retention of local geotechnical engineering services company Terracon Consultants, Inc. for preliminary site investigation at city-owned property near the intersection of Alabama Highway 69 and Beech Grove Road. The city intends to use the property to construct a multipurpose storm shelter and community center, while also planning for a future reconfiguring of the flow of nearby traffic to simplify highway access to Beech Grove Road and Good Hope School Road.
— Approved a name change for a previously approved manufacturing license, recognizing E and B LLC as the documented name for previous license grantee Ethos Craft Brewing. The company is among the business tenants slated to occupy a new restaurant, microbrewery and winery storefront under construction within the city limits along County Road 222.
— Solicited, for presentation at a future meeting, recommendations by the council for an alternate appointee to the Good Hope Zoning Board of Adjustments.
— Heard an informal request from mayor Jerry Bartlett for councilmembers to present locally eligible donation request candidates for potential inclusion in the 2024-2025 fiscal year budget.
The council’s next regular meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9 in the council meeting room at Good Hope City Hall.
