Car crash leaves one dead, two injured Saturday evening

Two people were injured and another killed in a two-vehicle crash Saturday, Aug. 24, along Interstate 65 near Dodge City.

According to a statement from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, a Ford Mustang driven by 21-year-old Mirra Bride Dot Popee Chafin, left the roadway and overturned, ejecting her and a passenger, 23-year-old Lara A. Phillips.

Both women were from Cullman.

The statement from ALEA said neither Phillips nor Chafin were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

The unoccupied vehicle then reentered oncoming traffic and was struck by an SUV driven by 56-year-old, Hayden resident Suzanne Woods.

Chafin was pronounced dead at the scene while Chafin and Woods were transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham for medical treatment.
