High school sports fans and family members will be able to trade in the Friday night lights to bask in the comfortable glow of their own televisions this fall as Cullman County Schools begins broadcasting its football games.
The Cullman County Board of Education recently announced select home games would now be broadcast via the ccboe.tv app beginning with Friday’s, Aug. 23, game between Hanceville and Cold Springs.
The district’s media and communications specialist Ty Watwood said the streaming service was launched three years ago as a way to make access to school events easier and more accessible to parents and families who may be unable to attend in person.
“We had a lot of people who may be out of town or something. Sometimes grandparents can’t always make it out to a game. This is just a way to give our students a little more exposure,” Watwood said.
The district’s new mobile broadcasting trailer — which will double as an on-site medical unit — will be making its rounds throughout the county during the course of the season to air five games. Superintendent Shane Barnette said the games were carefully selected to ensure all seven of the district’s schools received airtime.
The games selected to for streaming are:
— Cold Springs at Hanceville: Aug. 23.
— Hanceville at Holly Pond: Aug. 30.
— West Point at Fairview: Sept. 9.
— Hanceville at Vinemont: Oct. 4.
— Fairview at Good Hope: Nov. 1.
Livestreams of the games will be available to watch on the ccboe.tv website or by adding the channel — search “Cullman County Schools” — to your Roku, Amazon or Apple television. For those without streaming services, games will also be aired on Spectrum channel 180 through a partnership with My Cullman Television. Games will also be archived and available to watch on demand via the website or on the district’s free Cullman County Schools mobile app.
“We know that there are a lot of extended families who can’t come out on Friday night, so we are super excited to be able to offer this service to the residents of Cullman County. Any time that we can celebrate our students or highlight the things our students are accomplishing is a good day for Cullman County Schools,” Barnette said.
