PREP SPORTS: Local standouts compete at All-Star Sports Week

The 28th annual Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) All-Star Sports Week took place earlier this month — and a handful of local standouts represented their schools and North teams well in Montgomery.

Basketball

— Good Hope’s Ava McSwain secured 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including a 4-for-4 mark from 3-point range, three rebounds, an assist and a steal to take home MVP honors and lead the North to an 87-46 victory over the South. 

— Cullman’s Jake Dorough scored two points and had two rebounds in the North’s 97-85 win.


Cross Country

— Cold Springs’ Hayla Watson (23:15.20) finished 15th in the girls division as the North earned a 17-38 victory over the South.

— Cold Springs’ Sage Nelson (16:43.23) and Drew Dykes (16:53.56) finished seventh and ninth, respectively, in the boys division — won by the North (20-41). Cold Springs’ Casey Howell served as the squad’s head coach.


Golf

— Cullman’s Jazmin Conn teamed up with Alexandria’s Nevaeh Foster to tie McGill-Toolen’s Addison Fairley and St. Paul’s Laurel Gottlieb in their 18-hole competition (9-9) — with the North squad collecting a 51-39 victory. Cullman’s Jonathan Hayes, meanwhile, served as head coach of the North boys, who recorded a 39-33 win.
