Locals recognized for SkillUSA wins

Wallace State Community College students returned home with 13 medals from the annual SkillsUSA Championship competition held in Atlanta, Georgia June 26-27.

More than 6,000 students from every state competed in 115 hands on occupational and leadership competitions over the course of the two-day event. Industry leaders from small businesses, corporations, trade associations and workers unions evaluated the contestants against their real-world entry level standards.

The SkillsUSA Championships event is held annually for students in middle school, high school or college/postsecondary programs as part of the SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference.

“This showcase of career and technical education demonstrates SkillsUSA at its finest. Our students, instructors and industry partners work together to ensure that every student excels. This program expands learning and career opportunities for our members,” Executive Director Chelle Travis said in a press release.

WSCC medal winners were:

— Jennifer Jester was awarded the college silver medal in Technical Computer Applications.

— Kyndall Winters was awarded the college gold medal in Esthetics.

— Justin Ruth and Zach Hudson were awarded the team college medal in Mobile Robotics Technology.

— Hannah Watts and Landon Holmes were awarded the team college bronze medal in Commercial sUAS Drone.

— Graham Gilbreath and Issac Danieal were awarded the team college silver medal in Robotics-Urban Search and Rescue.

— Andrew Cooper and Avielle Shadrick were awarded the team college gold medal in Robotics and Automation Technology.

— Sophia Wright, Jonathan Zepedatrejo and Braden Tuttle were awarded the college gold medal in Crime Scene Investigation.

Competitors, including all WSCC medal winners, who were able to demonstrate workplace readiness were awarded a Skill Point Certificate during the event’s closing ceremony which can be added to an employment portfolio.

Students Jared Smith of Falkville, and Logan Caldwell of Cullman, were awarded SkillPoint Certificates, Smith in Related Technical Math and Caldwell for CNC Programmer.
