Cullman Economic Development Agency is addressing a social media post regarding Swafford road.
According to a press release from CEDA, a rendering posted on social media of a proposed shopping center development by Alumni Properties at the intersection of Swafford and Cherokee Avenue is inaccurate. The rendering showed the road closed from Cherokee Avenue to West Main Avenue.
According to the press release: “The City of Cullman has no plans to close Swafford Road and the Alumni Properties Managing Partner/CEO/President Keith Owens says he is not requesting closure of the road.
“Mr. Owens met with the Cullman City Council and Cullman County Commission last month to share more detailed information on the proposed development that has been in the planning states for several years.”
The statement went on to say the rendering shared on social media does not match current plans submitted to government officials.
“I have no intention of asking that Swafford Road be closed,” Owens said in the statement. “I will request the city consider improvements to the roadway with the projected traffic increase.”
Cullman Mayor Woody Jacobs said Swafford Road will not be closed for the development.
“That is an important city street connector and the city council and I can assure you permanent closing is not on the table. Swafford will remain open,” Jacobs said.
Cullman County Commission Chairman Jeff Clemons said the renderings Owens shared with the county commission did not show a Swafford Road closure.
Officials added that there are often multiple iterations of a site plan before a final design is presented.
