DECATUR — Cullman’s varsity boys soccer team defeated Decatur on penalty kicks Thursday night to secure a spot in the Class 6A playoffs.
The teams fought to a 0-0 draw at the end of regular time and neither team could find the back of the net in the two extra periods.
But Cullman was perfect went it mattered most.
The Bearcats (11-6-2, 2-2) got goals from Sam Montgomery, Zinedin Perez, Gianpaolo Cipollari, Wyatt Harris and Josue Sanchez on penalty kicks. Decatur matched Cullman on the first four PKs, but the final attempt banged off the crossbar above reserve keeper Jayce Johnston’s hand and set off a wild celebration for the road team.
Harris got the clean sheet for Cullman.
His highlight of the night came in the 60th minute when the Raiders got a breakaway for a one-on-one against the senior keeper. But Harris deflected the point-blank shot out of harm’s way to keep the game scoreless.
During the second extra-time session, Sanchez scored what appeared to be the go-ahead goal, but it was disallowed by an offsides penalty.
The Bearcats will travel to Fort Payne for the first round of the Class 6A playoffs.
