West Point’s varsity boys put together a balanced offensive effort and overcame a Herculean performance by Kollin Brown to take out Holly Pond 51-44 on Friday night and advance to the championship game of the Cullman County Basketball Tournament.
The No. 2 Warriors (16-8) led 44-36 midway through the fourth quarter before an 8-2 run by the sixth-seeded Broncos made it 46-44 with 2:08 remaining.
West Point, though, held Holly Pond scoreless the rest of the way and closed out the game from the free-throw line to grab a spot in the title tilt.
All nine players registered points for the Warriors, who will look to notch their first county crown since 2012 when it faces off against top-seeded Good Hope on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Brown, meanwhile, netted 39 of his team’s 44 points and was the only Bronco to score after the first quarter.
Coach Speak
“First of all, Kollin Brown is unbelievable. And coach (Tim) Willoughby … his system is tough to guard. I think we did a decent job defensively. We contested. We tried to deny the ball back, but we didn’t do a good job of that. At halftime, we talked about hedging the ball screen and getting the ball out of his hands, and we didn’t do that. But here’s the thing — we have busted our guys’ tails with a goal in mind of being a county champion and an area champion. They have a chance to win a county title tomorrow. They deserve it. We’ll put it up and see what happens.” — West Point’s Mason Voce
