Cullman gave its homecoming crowd more than enough to cheer about inside Oliver Woodard Stadium.

The Bearcats delivered their finest performance of the season on Friday night, crushing Lee-Huntsville 40-7 and improving to 3-2 following their second straight win.

“I’ve been telling the guys it’s us vs. us,” Cullman coach Danny Stiff said. “If we can eliminate mistakes, make people beat us and try to play our best … we came out firing on both sides. We were playing complementary football and boosting how one side was playing.

“There were lots of distractions, but we tried to get them focused on playing our best ball. I thought we played well up front on both sides. I give them credit. Those guys did what they needed to do.”

A 2-yard touchdown run by Jackson Sessions put Cullman on the board in the first quarter, and Tanner Gaines connected with Wyatt Buchanan from 10 yards out later in the period to make it 14-0.

LJ Turner (20 yards) and Sam Mayhair (2 yards) sandwiched touchdown runs around a Garrett Mobley field goal in the second quarter to send the Bearcats into intermission with a 30-0 advantage.

Lee-Huntsville opened the second half with a lengthy touchdown dash, but Stiff’s group answered with another scoring pass from Gaines — this one, a 14-yarder to Preston Gay — shortly afterward.

Mobley kicked his second field goal in the final stanza to wrap up the scoring.

Cullman will try for its third consecutive victory next week at Mortimer Jordan.

“We just have to get better every week,” Stiff said. “Our potential is high, and me and the rest of the coaches are trying to push the guys to get better. Our best football isn’t there yet, but it’s getting there. That’s what we’re working for … seeing that progress and becoming a better team all the way around.”
